October marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a global initiative reminding organisations across every industry to strengthen their defences and empower their teams. In aviation, where safety and precision are non-negotiable, the same standards must now apply to data integrity and digital resilience.
The Growing Cyber Threat in Aviation
The aviation industry is facing unprecedented turbulence, not in the skies, but in cyberspace. Over the past year, cyberattacks on aviation have surged by 131%, with ransomware incidents increasing sixfold. In 2023 alone, more than 6,000 aviation-related attacks were reported worldwide, many involving phishing, malware, and unauthorised access to critical systems.
These figures highlight a growing truth: cybersecurity has become as essential to aviation safety and reliability as aircraft maintenance and regulatory compliance. In the leasing sector, where digital records and documentation transfers underpin asset management, 71% of aviation cyber incidents involving credential theft or unauthorised access underscore the importance of protecting data integrity and system trust. Every digital handover, inspection report, or lease transition now carries both operational and cyber risk.
Our Commitment to Cyber Resilience
At Shannon Technical Services, we recognise that our industry’s resilience depends on more than technical excellence; it depends on trust, transparency, and accountability. That is why at STS we have invested in an in-house Data Management and Security Team to ensure we are at the forefront of cybersecurity resilience. Our ISO 27001:2022 certification and alignment with EASA Part-IS requirements reflect this commitment, ensuring that robust information security practices are implemented, maintained, and continuously improved across every department.
This framework extends beyond systems and policies to people, every member of our team completes mandatory cybersecurity awareness training, reinforcing a company-wide culture of vigilance and responsibility.
Protecting Partner Data through the Technical Records Hub
This commitment extends into our operational infrastructure, particularly our Technical Records Hub. Designed for the airlines and lessors we partner with, the Hub provides secure, centralised control and traceability of sensitive technical documentation. We store and digitise hard copy records for airlines and lessors securely and cost-efficiently, ensuring that vital aircraft records, from asset information to historical maintenance data, are protected and readily available. These records are essential for ensuring the smooth handover or sale of an asset or upkeep of the aircraft asset. With advanced cybersecurity safeguards built in, the Hub ensures every record remains protected, compliant, and easily accessible. By embedding our security controls directly into the data-sharing process, we help our partners reduce operational risk, maintain regulatory confidence, and preserve the digital integrity of their global fleets.
For our airline and lessor partners, the benefit is assurance, knowing that every exchange of technical data takes place within a controlled, secure, and fully auditable environment. STS’s embedded cybersecurity and data governance controls mean sensitive records can be shared with confidence, without compromising compliance or operational efficiency. Our systems not only safeguard information integrity but also streamline collaboration, enabling faster decision-making, smoother transitions between assets, and reduced administrative overhead. In short, our controls turn data security into a tangible operational advantage.
Empowering People as the First Line of Defence
Ransomware remains one of the industry’s most disruptive threats, with 27 major aviation-related incidents carried out by 22 distinct groups between 2024 and early 2025. These attacks strike at the very trust that underpins every customer relationship. That is why we continually invest in secure systems, staff awareness, and transparent communication. Our focus goes beyond compliance; it is about preserving operational integrity and confidence across every partnership.
According to recent reports, 90% of security incidents originate from human error, and the average cost of a data breach in 2024 reached €4.5 million. These figures reinforce a simple truth: cybersecurity is no longer optional or confined to IT; it is part of the foundation of reliable, safe, and efficient aviation.
Cybersecurity Awareness Month serves as a timely reminder that protection is a shared responsibility. Every team member, from technical engineering to IT, plays a role in maintaining our collective defence. Through ongoing upskilling and training, collaboration, and clear communication, we continue to strengthen the human firewall, ensuring that people remain our first line of resilience.
Building Digital Trust for the Future
As we expand our services and digital capabilities, our commitment to security, reliability, and transparency remains unwavering. From the Technical Records Hub to our software systems, every platform we operate is built with compliance and protection at its core. Our adherence to Part-IS standards and proactive cybersecurity investments ensure we are not only meeting regulatory expectations but also safeguarding our customers and the wider aviation ecosystem.
As aviation becomes increasingly digital, cybersecurity is integral to maintaining trust, safety, and operational excellence. At Shannon Technical Services, we continue to invest in secure technologies, skilled people, and transparent practices, ensuring that every partnership we build is protected by design and strengthened by confidence.
At Shannon Technical Services, our mission is clear: to maintain trust through security, uphold transparency through accountability, and achieve cost-savings through efficiency.
