Parts Procurement Support for 5 x A330 Aircraft

Overview:

In early September 2023, Shannon Technical Services (STS) was engaged by a leading lessor to provide materials procurement support for 5 A330 aircraft across Europe and China. China was a new market for the lessor so this was an important reason they looked for external support, in addition to the high volume of parts that would be needed on this project. 

Key Challenges Faced:

  • Staggered start dates and overlapping projects: each aircraft began at a different time and location, which required flexible planning.
  • High-volume procurement per MSN: about 5,000 parts per aircraft with frequent scope changes to manage.
  • Complex multi-continent logistics: movements across Europe and China with customs, local market nuances and variable transit times.
  • Tight lead times and repair shop turnarounds: close coordination with suppliers and MROs to keep schedules intact.
  • Cost control from day one: disciplined price comparisons and negotiation to protect the budget.
  • Clear communication across teams: remote project lead and on-site materials coordinators to maintain fast, accurate decisions.

  • Commercial discipline: data-led negotiation using historic pricing, reinforced by PO approvals, spend caps, variance tracking and documented savings.
  • Supply chain resilience and speed: advance exchanges to protect schedule and cash, supported by pre-cleared logistics, AOG pathways and customs documentation to minimise transit time.

Results Achieved

Across the programme we delivered over $1.95 million in cost savings on a managed parts spend of $12,551,291. We actioned 2,515 orders with shorter RFQ to PO cycle process times via our streamlined parts procurement software. A structured advance exchange strategy, including 48 transactions, protected the schedule, improved repair turnaround adherence and kept availability high. Clear reporting gave stakeholders a single view of progress, risk and spend, and the programme finished on time and on budget.
