The modifications focused on the removal and reconfiguration of galley ovens, where the client required a tailored solution to meet operational and regulatory needs.

Initially, the request was for temporary oven removals, but the scope evolved into a permanent solution. This required a full design package under Part 21 approval, along with sourcing of materials to support the modifications.

Part 21 Reconfiguration of Galley Ovens

Overview:

Shannon Technical Services delivered a bespoke Part 21-approved galley modification for Macquarie, developing a permanent oven-removal solution when no OEM option existed. The team produced a full design and material package within two weeks, enabling the MRO in Sofia to complete the installation on time and helping Macquarie maintain its delivery schedule to the airline.

Key Challenges Faced:

  • No OEM solution available: The aircraft galleys were not supported by an off-the-shelf modification kit, meaning a bespoke engineering solution was required.
  • Tight delivery deadlines: The aircraft had to be delivered within a specific timeframe to the airline. Delays would risk Macquarie losing its maintenance slot with the MRO and potentially missing the delivery commitment.
  • Practical integration: Removing ovens left exposed compartments, which could not remain open. These needed to be covered securely, safely, and in compliance with airworthiness regulations.
  • Remote project delivery: The physical modification was carried out in Sofia, Bulgaria, meaning STS needed to deliver a complete design and material solution without direct on-site installation support.

Shannon Technical Services provided a bespoke design and engineering solution under Part 21 approval, including:

  • Tailored design package to allow permanent removal of selected ovens.
  • Custom fabricated covers using sheet metal to close off the vacant oven compartments, ensuring a seamless and compliant galley appearance.
  • Material sourcing and supply to ensure all required components were available for the MRO carrying out the installation.
  • Rapid turnaround approval process, with close client liaison to ensure all design requirements were met.
  • Cabin safety and avionics compliance certification: All modifications were reviewed and approved in line with EASA Part 21 standards, ensuring structural integrity, fire safety, and proper handling of any electronic and wiring interfaces.

The modification was delivered as a complete design and approval package, allowing the client’s chosen MRO to complete the installation independently.
